The ATHE Level 4 Extended Diploma in Computing is the first year of the degree programme. The qualification is equivalent to the first year of a Computing degree qualification in the UK university system.
This qualification has been developed to conform to the requirements of the RQF and offers learners comprehensive knowledge and practical skills across key areas of computing. It provides a strong foundation in systems analysis, programming, databases, networks, security, and professional practice, preparing learners for further study or diverse roles in the technology sector.
For entry onto this qualification, students must have at least one of the following:
Learn to analyse, design, and document IT systems to meet client requirements, understand the system development lifecycle, and apply problem-solving techniques.
Develop computer programs using modern programming and scripting languages, understand programming fundamentals, and apply coding best practices.
Design and implement relational database systems, understand data modelling concepts, and apply SQL for data management.
Understand computer networks, security principles, and risk mitigation, learn about network architectures and security protocols.
Apply legal, ethical, and professional standards in computing practice, understand data protection laws and professional codes of conduct.
Understand different methods and tools for systems analysis, apply analytical techniques to evaluate and improve IT systems.
Learn data preparation techniques, understand data quality management, and apply methods to ensure data accuracy and reliability.
Apply statistical methods for data analysis, understand probability distributions, and conduct hypothesis testing.
Create effective data visualisations and analytical dashboards, communicate insights through visual representations.
Develop advanced programming skills, understand complex programming concepts, and apply object-oriented programming principles.
Synthesize knowledge and skills in a comprehensive computing project, demonstrate ability to apply learning across multiple units.
On successful completion of the qualification, students may progress onto the ATHE Level 5 Extended Diploma in Computing, which is equivalent to the second year of a UK Bachelor’s degree, transfer to a university or pursue a career in computing.
